MSc Financial Management in Business is a new
programme which aims at meeting the substantial
market demands for programmes in financial
management. The programme recognises that many
students wish to follow a career in financial management
but do not have the necessary knowledge or expertise to
join an extension masters programme; it has been designed for students with non-relevant first degrees to
enter a career path in financial management. Whilst the main focus of the programme is on financial management the content has been designed to provide a sound understanding of business and thereby provides the relevance to financial management practices.

Who is this programme for?

Students joining the programme will have a non-relevant
first degree (i.e. not in finance or financial management).
It is expected that they will have a strong interest in following a career in financial management.

Programme Structure and Content

The term financial management covers a wide range of subjects. This programme focuses on financial management within a business context and the structure is shown in the table below: Whilst the main focus of the content is on financial management the development of knowledge and expertise of a general business management nature provides an important underpinning for students with limited business knowledge. This is achieved in the module Managing for Sustainable Competitive Advantage.

The programme also contains two further modules which relate to the Newcastle Business School postgraduate aims of personal development, leadership and research: Developing Self and Business Research Analysis. The remaining five modules relate to financial management. Modules shown below in semesters one and two are taught. The dissertation, in the final part of the programme, is a major piece of work undertaken by students and, to provide the necessary support, a personal tutor is allocated to guide students through the process. Themes contained within the modules are:

  • Business strategy; creating value through the integration of the business functions (e.g. marketing, finance, logistics, human resource management)
  • International corporate finance and money markets
  • Mergers and acquisitions, private equity investment,
    management buy-outs
  • Strategic investment decisions and risk in multinationals
  • Performance measurement and management - individual companies and portfolio
  • Accounting regulation and its impact on profit measurement

Financial management and business management is explored within a global framework and students will make extensive use of data available through the university library databases and other data available on the worldwide-web.

Career Opportunities

Whilst this is a new programme graduates on related financial management programmes have found success in a wide variety of careers although the majority have entered the financial services industry or financial management departments of multinational companies. Many have chosen to enter the banking world either in the UK or internationally.

Distinctive Characteristics
