Newcastle Business School, part of Northumbria University, has been shortlisted for a prestigious Times Higher Award for its unique 'Graduate Tutors Scheme' - the first programme of its kind in UK.
Aimed at those at the beginning of their academic careers, the scheme was introduced in 2005 and has so far seen the appointment of 12 graduate tutors. Teaching students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level whilst also conducting research towards the completion of their own PhDs, the innovative scheme also allows the graduate tutors to also gain their Academic & Professional Learning Postgraduate Certificate.
Nominated by Times Higher for 'Outstanding support for early careers researchers', the innovative scheme has strengthened Newcastle Business School's research capability considerably.
Professor Paul Croney, Dean of Newcastle Business School, commented:
"Being nominated for such a highly esteemed award is a clear indication of the resounding success of the scheme. Those we've appointed were chosen for their ability and based on the strength of their initial research proposals and their arrival is having a real positive impact as we continue to pioneer our teaching and research capabilities."
The graduate tutors are based together at Newcastle Business School's new 70 million pounds home at City Campus East enabling their research to feed directly into their daily teaching - benefiting students, lecturers and Newcastle Business School as a whole.
Paul added: " The groups' diversity and research-informed teaching is playing an integral role in Newcastle Business School's strategy to create a dynamic research culture where ideas and experience can be shared openly across the team."
The research interests of the group reflect the underlying subject areas of research across the School. These comprise Strategic Management and International Business, Accounting and Finance, Organisation and Human Resources Management, Marketing, Supply Chain Management and Leadership.
