
A globe-trotting Newcastle Business School student was acknowledged in the House of Commons for her academic achievements.
Helina Mengistu won the Institute of Travel and Tourism's Student of the Year award after being nominated by the tutors at Newcastle Business School during her final year of a BA Honours degree in Travel and Tourism Management.

The Yemen-born 24-year-old graduated with a first class degree in the subject and was presented with the IT's award by MP Margaret Hodge at a drinks reception in the House of Commons.
She said: " I was very surprised and really pleased when I found out I had won the award. I love the travel and tourism industry because it is so fast-paced and dynamic. I've worked in hospitality since I was 16. "I enjoy working with people and serving people."
In August Helina will travel to the Middle East to begin her new job as a trainee Human Resources manager at The Ritz hotel in Bahrain.
She added:"I've always been interested in the field of human resources and would love to progress. I want to travel around the world."
Helina who has lived in several countries including Yemen, Ethiopia and Northern Ireland, said that she enjoyed her time in Newcastle.
"I lived in Heaton and Jesmond and loved being at Northumbria University," she said. "The people and the nightlife in Newcastle are amazing."
Newcastle Business School lecturer Bridget Major said:
"During her period of study Helina has continuously sought to develop herself. She is a classic example of a student who has set herself perpetual goals and challenges.
She has conducted herself brilliantly in terms of research, analysis and a blend of theoretical and practical learning.
We wish Helina all success in her future career."
