Why should I study tourism and Hospitality Management?

The new MSc has been designed for people wanting a career in one of the worlds' largest and most exciting industries.

Tourism is everywhere in the 21st century and travel has almost become part of ordinary life for millions of people across the planet.

The World Tourism Organisation (the WTO) estimates that by 2020, the world will see 1.6 billion arrivals across the planet. What is more, it is believed that although Europe will remain a largest tourism region, tourism growth will be fastest in East Asia and the Pacific, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Tourism has a role to play, not just in the lives of the tourists but also in the way economies develop and grow. Tourism can be a powerful part in the development of young economies as well as in more established ones.

Large numbers of people are employed in travel, tourism and hospitality, working in jobs that bring them into contact with the customer directly or in jobs "back-stage" that support and supply the industry. Hotels, restaurants, airlines, cruise line companies, theme parks, museums, national parks tourist information offices etc. etc. are all part of this giant industry, but so are regional planning offices, ministries, economic development authorities and many other institution.

Modern tourism has been around for one hundred and fifty years. As it grows and mature and spreads into every nation of the world, it requires highly trained and educated employees and managers with a strong commitment to professionalism and to world-class standards.

If you see your future in travel, tourism and hospitality then Newcastle Business School’s new MSc in Tourism and Hospitality Management is for you.

If you are not certain where you want your career to go, or if you already know how you want to specialise - we offer you two pathways to choose between in the second semester. You can either follow the pathway on Destination, Events and Attractions Management, which prepares you for work in tourism and hospitality supply; or you can follow the pathway on Managing Tourism and Development, and Airlines, where you study the management of regional development and regeneration, responsible tourism and, of course, airline management.

What is the programme like?

The programme lasts approximately twelve months.

The first two semesters are “taught” semesters: you and the rest of your class follow a series of lecture programmes, which give you a grounding in modern tourism and hospitality management. At the end of each semester you are assessed and given marks that become part of your final result.

First Semester

You follow a double strand of lecture programmes. The first strand gives you the foundations for understanding how the tourism and hospitality industries work and how they are marketed and managed. The second strand is the Newcastle Business School programme in modern management principles, where you learn about modern managers develop themselves as managers and about how to carry out research.

Second Semester

You choose your specialist pathway and also continue your modern management programme, learning how to manage a modern business for profit. In this semester you are also begin work on your dissertation and begin your regular meetings with one of our staff who will support you through your work on your dissertation.

After the end of the two taught semesters, you will concentrate on your dissertation. The MSc dissertation is a piece of research that allows you to concentrate on an area of tourism or hospitality management that interests you in particular. You will be able to use our modern and well-stocked library services and will do research in or outside the UK: that is your decision. Perhaps your dissertation is about the area of the industry which you see yourself working in after you have graduated.

You will then graduate in December of July depending on when you finish your work.

Throughout your time here, you will have personal access to the academics who teach you – Northumbria University is particularly proud of its student support services generally – and to a range of other services such. We make an effort to help you make a success of your time here. The Business School is housed in a top-class modern building with landmark status: you will find yourself in an environment which you will remember for the rest of your life.

We do not forget you after you have left: our graduates work across the world and often stay in contact with us for many years after graduation. We are always glad to hear from them and to offer them support in their later careers if they need it. At Newcastle Business School, an education is for life.
