
Programme Information
The BA (Hons) in Accounting has been designed to provide a cutting-edge educational experience attractive to those wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or related areas. Because it is externally accredited, you enjoy valuable and significant exemptions from the examinations of major professional
accountancy bodies.
The aim of the programme is to enable you to effectively and critically acquire a wide variety of knowledge, expertise, ethics and attitudes. It also helps you to develop personal and interpersonal skills attractive to potential employers particularly within the
Accounting profession.
Programme Content
The programme is delivered within an environment which is friendly, supportive informal and flexible. You are encouraged to develop your personal skills of analysis and synthesis and to become fluent and experienced in communicating ideas, opinions and conclusions.
Year 1
In the first year you study Finance, Financial Accounting and Management Accounting as well as Management and the International Business Environment. Support studies include Financial Modelling, Computer Accounting and Law.
Year 2
In the second year you study Corporate and Group Accounting, Conceptual Frameworks, Advanced Management Accounting, Corporate Financial Strategy, Taxation, and Law and Ethics. Where appropriate, teaching is in accordance with International
Accounting Standards.
Year 3/4
In the final year you study Corporate Financial Management, current issues in Financial Reporting, Auditing and Assurance, Ethics, Strategic Management, Accounting, and Advanced Taxation. An important component is the undergraduate dissertation - a self - managed project which is supervised on a one-to-one basis by a member of the academic staff. Coursework and Assessment
Each semester is 15 weeks long and the final weeks are set aside for assessment. Professional accreditation requires that much of the assessment is in the form of two hour examinations (three hours for double modules). However, other kinds of assessment are used as appropriate. Assessed coursework is an important
component of the final year.
Placement Information
There is the opportunity to undertake a year-long placement at the end of Year 2. You will get full support from the Placements Office to obtain a placement which prepares you for final year studies and future employment.

City and Guilds
Successful completion of the placement year to City and Guild standards allows the University to award the Licentiateship of City and Guilds (LCGI), a national qualification recognised by employers such as Lloyds TSB.
Careers
Employment prospects are good and graduates take up training contracts with the main six professional accountancy firms. Graduates have gone on to work in Pricewaterhouse Coopers, KPMG, Ernst and Young, Deloitte, Procter and Gamble and VATEch-Reyrolle. Other graduates find employment in industry, commerce, local authorities and hospitals. Graduates usually go on to complete a professional accountancy qualification and find the exemptions they get particularly valuable. Good contacts are maintained with the local accountancy profession, industry and commerce and outside speakers often participate in the delivery of the programme.
