Who is the programme for?

This programme is specifically designed for those
students who wish to follow a professional career in
accounting and finance, and whose aim is to obtain a
globally recognised professional accounting qualification
as well as a masters degree.

The programme is currently under development and will be ready for launch in September 2008. It is being developed in response to student demand for a Masters in Accounting and Finance which is closely linked to the professional accounting bodies, in particular the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Successful graduates of the programme will have achieved passes in ACCA's professional examinations papers, enabling them to become ACCA members; they will also obtain a recognised academic masters degree, in effect two qualifications. ACCA have been involved in the initial stages of the development of this programme and are very supportive.

Programme Content

The programme will consist of 180 credits, made up of 10 and 20 point modules. The majority of these modules will be closely related to ACCA's professional syllabuses, whilst the remainder will deliver the NBS's postgraduate aims relating to personal development, research and business awareness.

The structure has not yet been finalised but the content will be as follows;

       - Personal Development
       - Business Research Analysis
       - Business Management to Create Value
       - ACCA Professional Accountant (Core)
       - ACCA Corporate Reporting (Core)
       - ACCA Business Analysis (Core)
       - ACCA Advanced Financial Management (Option)
       - ACCA Advanced Performance Management (Option)
       - ACCA Advanced Audit and Assurance (Option)

The learning and teaching strategy will mainly focus on teaching to ACCA professional syllabuses. Students will be required to take externally assessed ACCA examinations and on successful completion they will be recognised by both ACCA and Northumbria University for accreditation purposes. Students will
be required to undertake one assessment for each subject area to satisfy the requirements of both institutions.

Newcastle Business School has a long history of teaching to professional programmes and many of its staff are members of professional accounting bodies. At undergraduate level Newcastle Business School already delivers a degree in accounting which achieves maximum exemptions from ACCA papers at the fundamental level.

Student Recruitment

Newcastle Business School will seek to recruit students with a recognised first degree which provides full exemptions from ACCA's fundamental papers, or who have already passed ACCA's own examinations at the fundamental level.

Distinctive Features

The programme provides a fast-track to an ACCA professional qualification and the ability to achieve two recognised qualifications; one academic and one professional. The programme is delivered by academically experienced and professionally qualified staff.
