Programme Information

The BA (Hons) Advertising Management is designed for students eager to become part of the fast paced and rewarding world of advertising.

The course is a vocational degree that provides a comprehensive coverage of a key marketing area of business - advertising and marketing communication - within the context of a business management programme.

As corporate and brand image become increasingly important in the global marketplace there is a real need for business graduates who can communicate and build relationships with key stakeholders such as management and internal audiences as well as creative consultants and agencies. Because this programme focuses on the management aspect of advertising, you don't need a design or creative background. Rather you will develop an appreciation of the role of creativity and communication when building and maintaining relationships with these key partners and stakeholders as part of a marketing role in an organisation.

Programme Content

Year 1

The first year is an introduction to modern business and management. In line with Newcastle Business School's philosophy, you study subjects such as International Business Environment,
Management, Finance, Business Processes and How to Solve Business Problems. You will also undergo a general Introduction to Advertising in order to develop an appreciation of the role of advertising and communications in business.

Year 2

In the second year the management topics continue and you study subjects such as Performance Management, Personal and Organisation Development and International business contexts. There are also modules developing the advertising context such as Advertising Management, Design and Brand and Marketing. The
second year will include a field trip to, for example, an advertising agency, Advertising Standards Authority or
Museum of Advertising.

Year 3

Placement year.

Year 4

All final year students do a dissertation and modules in Business Ethics and Strategic Management and Leadership. On the advertising side, there are modules in
Advertising Campaign and Strategy, Public Relations and Corporate Communication and Direct and Interactive Marketing.

Coursework and Assessment

Each semester is 15 weeks long and the final weeks are set aside for assessment. A variety of teaching and learning strategies are used to facilitate learning and to encourage and develop independent learning skills. The
programme is assessed by a combination of examinations (both open and closed book), course assessments and final year dissertation.

Placement Information

Placements can last up to 48 weeks and could be in a range of organisations from large multinationals like IBM or Heinz to smaller marketing consultancies. You might want to opt for a manufacturing organisation like Barbour, a service organisation like Marks and Spencer
or a local organisation, for example the International Centre for Life.

You will get full support from the Placements Office to obtain a meaningful placement which will prepare you for your final year studies and future employment. During your placement you will be working within a marketing or advertising department, specifically dealing with key aspects of communication.

City and Guilds

Successful completion of the placement year to City and Guild standards allows the University to award the Licentiateship of City and Guilds (LCGI), a national
qualification recognised by employers such as Lloyds TSB.
