Programme Information
The BA (Hons) Business Studies degree is a highly regarded qualification both nationally and internationally. It's an outstanding opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of the full range of business and management disciplines in preparation for a
career in management with multinational enterprises.
Over the first two years, you'll be exposed to the main functional areas of business and related subjects. In the final year you will get the chance to specialise in one of these subjects to broaden and deepen this understanding.
The third year is a year-long placement that gives you the
opportunity to develop the practical business skills and
apply theoretical knowledge gained over the first two years of the programme.
Programme Content
Year 1
The modules studied are: International Business
Environment, Business Processes and Systems, Financial Decision Making, Solving Business Problems, Management, and Directors, Shareholders and Rewards.
Year 2
Students study Global and International Business Contexts, Personal and Organisation Development, Business Performance Measurement, Marketing and Customers, Information Management and International Business Finance and Trade.
Year 3
Placement year.
Year 4
In the final year you study two core modules: Strategic Management and Leadership, and Business Ethics. You will also undertake a dissertation or project plus three
specialist modules. There are six pathways available and the current pathways include Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management and Finance and Entrepreneurship.
Coursework and Assessment
Each semester is 15 weeks long and the final weeks are set aside for assessment. A variety of teaching and learning strategies are used to facilitate learning and to encourage and develop independent learning skills. The programme is assessed by a combination of examinations (both open and closed book), course assessments and final year dissertation.
Placement Information
The placement year comes at the end of Year 2 and you will getm full support from the Placements Office to obtain a placement to prepare you for your final year studies and future employment.
All placements are subject to passing an interview and may be undertaken with a number of multinational and smaller companies.
Careers
Graduates from this degree have a good first employment record covering a wide range of appointments in industry, commerce and the public sector, for example Marks and Spencer, Barclays Bank, Yorkshire Water Authority, Xerox and Sainsbury.
City and Guilds
Successful completion of the placement year to City and Guild standards allows the University to award the Licentiateship of City and Guilds (LCGI), a national qualification recognised by employers such as Lloyds TSB.
