This is an exclusive programme open to specific organisations employees, please contact Guy Brown for eligibility.

This programme has been specifically tailored to meet the needs of existing and aspiring public sector managers.

In response to the changing government modernisation agenda, emphasis has been placed on enhancing management and leadership development skills both on an individual basis and within the workplace.

The PG Diploma in Management Development is taught via a flexible, distance-learning means of study incorporating 3 day block sessions delivered every 2 - 3 months.

Within 12 months and on successful completion of all 3 modules you will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. You will then have the opportunity to progress your qualification to Masters Level with completion of a 9 month service improvement project on a subject area of your choice.

All modules are assessed via assignments supported by individual tutorials and Action Learning Sets and on-line learning facilities such as the e-learning portal.

Course Structure

The following areas are studied in three modules:

Module 1 - Management Development In The Public Sector:

This role will consider the changing role of a manager in a public sector context particularly focussing upon the new demands modernisation has brought about. The theme of leadership and learning within the organisation will be key, alongside the process of developing a transformational culture.

On completion of the module you will be able to review and assess your own organisational environment and make recommendations for more effective individual and workplace management practice.

Module 2 - Managing Performance In The Organisation

Performance Management is a key tool required to achieve service improvement within a public sector organisation. As such, this module will introduce you to tools and concepts which encourage critical appraisal of your own performance and the performance of the wider organisation.

Particular emphasis will be placed upon understanding the government modernisation agenda and the subsequent performance mechanisms in place to achieve this, alongside the development of people management techniques.

Module 3 - Contemporary Issues For Public Sector Managers:

This module will focus upon the impact on managers and management practice of current important issues in the changing public services.

Throughout the module you will be encouraged to critically appraise concepts and evaluate practice, particularly in your own service.

Module content will be shaped by current practice and changing policy agenda, however, may include subjects including assessment of management and leadership, responding to change, collaboration and partnership, planning and strategy and shared services.

Management Investigation Report

This is a 9-month service improvement project that allows you to complete a work based management investigation report of your choice which aims to use and extend the knowledge and skills that have been acquired during the programme.

Working alongside a named tutor this project will require you to investigate an area of your workplace activity to identify areas of improvement, using literature and best practice to justify decisions.
