“I chose Newcastle Business School because of the post graduate qualification attached to the course and the credibility that this gives me, particularly as a professional self-employed coach. I have also found the psychological elements particularly relevant and in other courses there doesn’t seem to be as much psychological content. From a personal perspective I have gained enormously from the course in terms of my own self awareness and confidence. Professionally I feel that I have also developed and learnt a new skill set which I enjoy and that has already opened up new opportunities for me!”

Rachel Hegarty, HR Business Partner, One NorthEast

“I have been working as a coach for the past six years and decided to study the Post Graduate Certificate in Coaching as I wanted to gain a more robust coaching qualification and to study with some other people who were interested in coaching. The course has been an excellent investment; it’s a brilliant mix of practical skills and theory. The lecturers are passionate about coaching and bring their coaching skills and experience into the programme. The course has really grounded my coaching practice with a greater awareness of the psychological models, frameworks and perspectives. The course provides lots of opportunities to develop my skills as an experienced coach and it is refreshing to meet people who are enjoying the experience of coaching for the first time. As I normally work on my own, the course has refreshed and re energised me and I have made some great professional contacts. I would not hesitate to recommend this course to anyone who is interested in developing their skills as a coach.”

Course Information

Coaching is increasingly recognised as a tool that enables organisations to release and develop the true potential of its people. It also plays a key role in facilitating more effective internal and external interactions to the benefit of everyone involved.

With the business world moving forward at such a rapid pace, it has never been more critical for anyone involved in the management of people to have access to the most up-to-date and cutting edge coaching theory and practice available.

The fundamental aim of the Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching is to develop senior managers that instinctively know how to select, apply and integrate appropriate psychological and business coaching techniques into the day-to-day performance of an organisation.

This fast-paced and highly stimulating course is aimed at individuals that want to make an immediate and positive difference within an organisation and enhance their own coaching skills within a dedicated coaching context.

With a deliberately small intake of just 15 people per group, with three intakes per year, the programme aims is to develop professionally competent, skilled and focussed coaches that go on to create greatly improved levels of performance within an organisation.

Using the tools, theory and practices you develop during the programme, you will be able to identify those areas where coaching would have genuine benefits and be equipped to put those techniques into immediate and measurable effect.

As a candidate for the Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching you will already be a senior HR practitioner or line manager with a desire to develop coaching skills that translate into current and future organisational roles.

It is also aimed at practising coaches that are eager to further develop their coaching methodology and skills.

The PG Certificate in Coaching is a modularised programme taught over nine months.

The programme is divided into three modules:

Module One - Coaching Context and Identity (20 points)

  • The coaching context
  • Coaching from a psychological and business perspective
  • When to coach
  • Coaching identity
  • Values and beliefs
  • Principles of coaching
  • Coaching practice and reflection

Module Two - Coaching Interventions (20 points)

  • Psychological approaches - cognitive, psychodynamic, behavioural
  • The flow of coaching
  • Coaching conversations

Module Three - Coaching Competence (20 points)

Between modules, participants are required to coach and be coached by peers from the programme as well as creating a coaching development plan at the start of the programme. Participants are also required to submit a 3000 word reflective piece relating to their coaching experiences between modules.

In addition, participants are required to conduct coaching sessions and gather feedback from coachees within their organisations. This structured feedback together with personal reflections will form a 'coaching portfolio' to be submitted at the end of the programme along with a 1000 word reflective piece, critiquing your learning and skills development throughout the programme.

Study Information

Participants are required to spend a total of 32 hours per module with a mix of lectures, group (tutorials) and supervision. You will also undertake a substantial amount of self directed learning, with the support of the tutor and a peer from the programme. A considerable amount of pre-reading is expected for the taught sessions, as directed by the programme tutors.

Programme Attendance

The programme is designed to fit in with your existing work and leisure commitments. Students are required to attend three two-day teaching blocks over a five month period. Teaching takes place on Thursdays and Fridays with the majority of learning and skills practice taking place within your organisation.

Careers

The qualification will enable the learner to coach using a robust framework. This will provide opportunities to coach key individuals within your organisation and work towards creating a coaching culture.

From a career development perspective, the knowledge and skills you develop will enhance your managerial and leadership capability. The qualification could lead you into a people development role and heighten the impact you create within your organisation.
