The MSc Global Financial Management programme has
been developed in response to the considerable world
wide demand from students wishing to follow a career in
financial management. The programme was launched in
2000 and since then graduates have demonstrated
success in a variety of careers, confirming the
programme's potential to enhance employability in an
ever-increasing competitive market. To ensure that the
programme is up to date an extensive review has just taken place, part of which was to benchmark the content against syllabuses of the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA).
Who is the programme for?
Opportunities for careers in financial management are
considerable and varied. The programme is designed to build upon existing knowledge of financial management in order to provide the maximum benefit in terms of employability; in this context the programme is regarded as an extension masters. The programme therefore seeks to recruit graduates who already hold
a first degree in finance, financial management or a degree in business where there is considerable financial management content. Students with professional qualifications in accounting and finance will also be considered.
Programme Content
Financial management includes many subject areas.
Whilst there is considerable variation in the content of finance related postgraduate products, we have chosen to focus on investment, performance management and risk management.
Three modules relate to the Newcastle Business School's
postgraduate aims of personal development, leadership, research and business awareness: Developing Self, Business Research Analysis and Managing Value Strategically. The remaining six modules relate to financial management. The dissertation in semester three is a major piece of work undertaken by students and, to provide the necessary support, a personal tutor is
allocated to each student to guide them through the process.
Financial management themes contained within the modules are:
- International corporate finance and money markets
- Risk management and the use of financial
instruments
- Mergers and acquisitions, private equity investment,
management buy-outs
- Strategic investment decisions and risk in
multinationals
- Performance measurement and management -
individual companies and portfolios
- Ethical behaviour and corporate governance
Financial management is explored within a global framework and students will make extensive use of data available through the University's library databases and other data available on the web.
Career Opportunities
Some examples of employment which demonstrate the range of opportunities available to graduates include Analyst in a stockbrokers, Manager of poor performing debts in a bank, Trainee Manager within the treasury function of an international company, Recruitment Consultant specialising in finance personnel, University Lecturer studying for a PhD.
Distinctive Characteristics
The programme builds upon existing financial management knowledge and expertise and has an enviable record of proven career success.
