Bus tour of Hadrian’s Wall
* Cost - £10 per person
Stopping at various points of interest, the tour will be hosted by Dr Hans-Christian Andersen.
(Hadrian's Wall)
England as an Italian colony for four hundred years
Julius Caesar made two expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54, followed by a regular Roman invasion in 43 AD. Britain remained a Roman colony until 410 AD and Newcastle lies at one end of the wall - Hadrian’s Wall - which marked the border between Rome and Scotland. Much of the wall still stands and can be visited and you find the ruins of other reminders of Roman occupation in the landscape and towns along the line of Hadrian’s Wall, from coast to coast, and you can experience them in a number of museums and in the open landscape.

Saturday 13 June
Bus trip to Alnwick town
*Cost - £10 per person
Delegates will be taken to Alnwick and have the opportunity to visit the Alnwick Castle (aka Hogwarts School!) and Gardens as well as other local attractions. The bus will return delegates to Newcastle later in the day.

(Alnwick Castle)
Hogwarts School, Alnwick: Where Harry Potter learned to fly his broom.
Alnwick Castle goes back to 1096 and it has been home to the Dukes of Northumberland since 1306. The castle is a splendid example of the traditional English great house, still inhabited by the family but open to the public so that you can experience the splendour of the rooms they live in and see the antiques they have collected over the centuries. It was used as the location for part of Hogwarts School in the first two Harry Potter movies and is ideal for a game of quidditch, if you’ve brought you kit. Nearby is the castle’s park, Alnwick Gardens, a modern version of the traditional great park and a place of pilgrimage for rose lovers. In the village of Alnwick you will find traditional pubs (one of them owns the smoking saloon of the RMS Olympic, sister ship to the RMS Titanic) and one of Britain’s largest second hand/antique bookshops is housed in the old railway station.

(Durham Cathedral)
A great religious heritage
There was a time when North East England played a central part in the development of the Catholic Church. Not only does Durham Cathedral hold the remains and the original coffin of Saint Cuthbert (you can see the casket but not the saint himself). In nearby Jarrow, the Venerable Bede (England’s first historian) lived and wrote and, just an hour’s drive north of Newcastle, Lindisfarne (Holy Island), one of Britain’s most famous religious sites has been a site of worship since the 7th century.
