Dawn Robinson
Head of Learning and Development, Sage (UK)

Sage (UK) Limited is a subsidiary of the Sage Group plc, with over 5 million customers worldwide and the Global HQ situated here in Newcastle. A remarkable Northeast success story, being founded in 1981 on the Quayside, through a group of local students and entering the FTSE 100 in 1999.
The UK business is a leading supplier of business software & services to over 700,000 UK customers and employing more than 2,000 people.
Dawn has been with Sage for 6 years and in her current role as Head of Learning and Development for just over two. Her focus is to be a driving force for the business in all learning and development solutions and to continuously improve Sage's people’s capabilities through the design and development of corporate programmes. The challenge to attract and resource the right people, support them with their development and careers and to build a talent pipeline for future roles in Sage are high on Dawn's agenda.
Through her specialist team, she develops and delivers management and leadership development, shapes policy & processes to match the needs of the business strategy and builds the support infrastructure to help Sage's people grow.
Dawn's career has spanned over 20 years in the private and public sector, including private/public partnerships, covering generalist HR, development and commercial roles. Her experiences have included retail with M&S and Boots, manufacturing with De La Rue and the IT sector with Spring.com.
She has travelled with Sage on the exciting 'cultural' journey of change and her story of success and challenge is what she would like to share with you, with a particular focus on the Enable management development programme, recognised regionally for its innovation by cipd.
Professor Sharon Turnbull
Director, Centre for Applied Leadership Research, The Leadership Trust Foundation

Having spent 15 years in managerial positions with a variety of companies and consultancies Sharon changed direction and became an academic before joining The Leadership Trust in 2003 where she could combine both worlds to connect theory to practice. As Director of the Centre for Applied Leadership Research Sharon works with clients, and the business development team to ensure that the design and outcomes of the leadership development interventions are maximising organisational impact as well as personal learning. She also writes and presents new ideas in the field of leadership at a number of conferences, as well as being Cycle Director for the International Masters Programme in Practising Management and taking a lead on the MA Leading Change in conjunction with the University of Gloucestershire.
Sharon has a PhD in Management, an MBA and is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. These have given her the opportunity over the course of her career a chance to deepen her understanding of organisations, culture, leadership and change. She was also appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Gloucestershire last year giving her a new and interesting learning opportunity.
As a Course Director Sharon has worked with Sheffield Hallam University on a major change programme which has seen 150 leaders going through the programme over the last four years.
A great passion for travel and learning about other cultures is fulfilled by the varied work Sharon undertakes around the world leading courses for leaders from many countries and sectors firing her interest in the subject of cross cultural leadership. Her love of trekking has taken Sharon to Nepal, Peru and Morocco as well as the beautiful Herefordshire countryside.
Jan Parkinson
MD UK Local Government Association

Managing Director of Local Government Employers (LGE) UK and Visiting Fellow to Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University
Jan worked in the NHS in the early 1990s on the organisational development issues arising from the 1989 reform agenda.
She joined Gateshead Council in 1996 as Deputy Director, and in 1997 became Strategic Director of HR to the council as well as Personnel Adviser to Northumbria Police Authority. She remained in these posts for 10 years and during that time led major organisational and culture change programmes.
She took up post as Managing Director of Local Government Employers (LGE) in June 2006. LGE works in partnership with local authorities, regional employers and other bodies to lead and create solutions on pay, pensions and employment policy issues. It is responsible for negotiating the pay of 2.2 million public sector workers, and a paybill of over £46 billion.
She was President of the Public Sector People Management Association (PPMA) in 2005. She is also a non- executive member of Four Housing Group, a Council Member of the University of Newcastle, a visiting fellow at the business school of the University of Northumbria, and a Commissioner on the Women and Work Commission.
Professor Darlene Russ-Eft
Professor and Chair, Adult Education and Higher Education Leadership, College of Education, Oregon State University and President Elect of the Academy of HRD
Darlene Russ-Eft, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of Adult Education and Higher Education Leadership in the College of Education at Oregon State University, where she teaches masters and doctoral courses in research, program evaluation, and learning theory. Her most recent books are Evaluator Competencies: Standards for the Practice of Evaluation in Organizations (2008, Jossey-Bass) and A Practical Guide to Needs Assessment (2007, Pfeiffer), Dr. Russ-Eft is President-Elect for the Academy of Human Resource Development (www.ahrd.org) and is a current director of the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (www.ibstpi.org).
She is immediate past editor of the research journal, Human Resource Development Quarterly. She received the 1996 Editor of the Year Award from Times Mirror, the Outstanding Scholar Award from AHRD, and the Outstanding Research Article Award from ASTD. Prior to joining Oregon State University in 2002, she was Director of Research at AchieveGlobal and Division Director of Research for Zenger-Miller. Her B.A. in psychology is from the College of Wooster, her M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology are from the University of Michigan.
Helene Speight
General Manager, General Electric and Finalist of The Apprentice 2008

Helene Speight reached the final of BBC's The Apprentice 2008 watched by an estimated 10 million viewers after a series of gruelling tasks. On finishing the show, Helene returned to her role as a global pricing leader at GE, the world's sixth largest company. She has since accepted a promotion to General Manager that sees her running a $100 million turnover business with 700 employees and bases in Leicestershire and Houston, Texas.
Helene has also started studying at the world class Henley Business School for an Executive MBA. Despite Helene's portrayal on the Apprentice as "the corporate one", at odds with Sir Alan Sugar's pragmatism, the real Helene is a warm and colourful character. Growing up in West Yorkshire she had a difficult family background and left school early.
She played football for 20 years and is an accomplished trumpet and cornet player having performed at the highest level with some of the country's best brass bands.
Helene is passionately interested in developing people and this has been an ongoing thread throughout her career, with experience in recruitment and performance management for well-known businesses. She plays a key role in the GE Women’s network and is actively involved in many charities including NSPCC, Wishes for Kids and NACOA. Since The Apprentice, Helene has also taken the opportunity to share her experience and stories on the speaker circuit.
Professor Larry Dooley
Human Resource Development, Texas A & M University USA and International Chief Operating Officer of the Academy of Human Resource Development

Dr. Dooley an associate professor in the Human Resource Development Program I the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University. Moreover, he is a visiting professor in the School of Management and Law at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland and a visiting professor in the Centre for Human Resource Management Research at Peking University in Beijing, China. Dr. Dooley is Past-President of the Academy of Human Resource Development and of the Academy of Human Resource Development Foundation. Dr. Dooley currently serves as the International Chief Operating Officer of the Academy of Human Resource Development.
He is Chair of the Board of Directors of Human Resource Development International journal as well as Associate Editor of International Journal of Management Education. His research interests are in international human resource development and eLearning . His current inquiry is investigating how generational characteristics affect communication in organizations.
Dean Royles
Executive Director Workforce & Education, NHS Northwest, Chair of CIPD Board
Dean Royles joined NHS North West in December 2007 from United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULH), where he was Director of Human Resources (HR) and Communications. Before this he was deputy Director of Workforce for the NHS at the Department of Health, where he was responsible for the development of workforce strategy in the NHS and social care.
Dean joined the Department of Health in April 2003 as Head of HR Capacity for England. There he was responsible for developing a national HR Strategy for the NHS. He also had responsibility for work around the European Working Time Directive and supporting the delivery of the Gershon Productive Time targets.
Dean was also previously the first HR director at East Midlands Ambulance Service following its creation in 1999. He has worked at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and in a community trust, having started his HR career in industrial relations in a local authority.
He has an MSc in Human Resources and is also a visiting fellow at the University of Northumbria, a Non-Executive Director and the incoming elected Chair on the Board of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a chartered fellow for the same organization. He is also a Non-Executive Director with the NW Learning and Skills Council.
Professor Jim Stewart
Running Stream Professor of HRD and Director of PhD and DBA Programmes, Faculty of Business and Law, Leeds Metropolitan University, Chair University Forum for Human Resource Development

Jim Stewart started his career in retail management before moving into local government and then academia. As an academic he worked first at Wolverhampton Business School and then Nottingham Business School where he became Professor of HRD before taking up his current post at Leeds Business School. Jim is the author and co-editor of 12 books as well as numerous articles and funded research reports for the EU, the LSC, ESRC, CIPD and government departments. As well as Charing the UFHRD Jim holds three national appointments with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development including that of Chief Examiner for Learning and Development and is also a member of the Advisory Board of the HE Academy Subject Centre for Business, Management and Accountancy.
