Programme Information
The International Business Degrees are about introducing you to the rapidly changing global business environment and to establish awareness of the impact that international activity has on all aspect of corporate life. Here you get a thorough grounding in the impact of national business culture on decision making as well as an understanding and experience of those issues relating to the movement of people within International organisations.
Business graduates that can demonstrate a strong international perspective are in high demand, another aim is to provide the opportunity to develop language skills. Graduates who are fluent in a major European language besides English have a 'head-and shoulders' advantage over their peers when it comes to employment
and promotion.
Students studying the four year programme 'with Languages' are expected to spend one academic year studying or working outside the UK.
Programme Content
Year 1
Topics include International Business Environment, Management, solving Business problems, Finance and Data plus Business Analysis. The chosen Language comprises 30% of the programme (40 credits).
Year 2
Students study International Business Context, Personal and Organisation Development, Business Performance
Measurement, Marketing and your chosen Language.
Year 3
Placement Year.
Year 4
Topics in the final year include Business Ethics, Culture and Organisations, Strategic Management, your chosen
Language and a dissertation or project.
Coursework and Assessment
The aim of the learning and teaching strategies used on this programme is to develop knowledge and expertise in
graduate, professional and academic skills which will underpin future career development and educational progression.
It's a balanced combination of structured teaching, seminar and group activities together with associated personal learning. Formal class contact time is normally
10-15 hours per week, supplemented by independent study and directed learning. Methods of assessment throughout the degree include assignments, open and
closed book examinations, computer work and case studies. In the final year the 10,000 word dissertation is a major piece of independent research based work.
Each student is allocated a supervisor who provides guidance for their dissertation.
International Opportunities
In addition to studying or working outside the UK, the programme is delivered and managed by experienced international managers to cohorts of international
students. The same programme is delivered at locations on mainland Europe and in Asia.
It also presents an unbeatable opportunity to study and gain additional qualifications at Newcastle Business School's partner universities in locations such as Lyon, Grenoble, Nice, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Madrid, Granada, Cadiz, Hong Kong, Atlanta, Mexico City, Moscow and
many more. The placement year can also be arranged with an international organisation outside the UK.
Placement Information
There is an opportunity to undertake a year long paid work placement at the end of Year 2. Students get full support from the Placements Office to obtain a placement to prepare them for final year studies and future employment.
Careers
Graduates from the International Business Management with language programme can expect to gain employment in a wide range of careers encompassing positions in many areas such as Finance, Marketing,
Tourism and Human Resource Management in both national and international organisations, most of whom
demand competence in a second language.
Graduates have gone on to work, for example, as Consultants, Financial Analysts, Human Resource Officers and Marketing Managers.
