Programme Information

 

The BA Marketing Management is a vocational degree that equips you with the in-depth understanding, skills and experience you need to enter this rewarding business discipline in a management role.


The programme also offers you the flexibility of taking a
one-year work-based marketing placement in industry.
This is an outstanding opportunity for you to experience the real business world and put into practice what you have learned on the programme, whether you choose to work for a large multinational or a Small Medium Enterprise (SME).

 

This professional programme also gives maximum exceptions from the appropriate professional bodies - for instance, Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional PG Diploma.

 

Programme Content

 

Year 1


The first year is an introduction to modern business and
management. In line with Newcastle Business School's philosophy, students study subjects such as International Business Environment, Management, Finance, Business Processes and How to Solve Business Problems. Students also take a module in Fundamentals of Marketing in order to develop an appreciation of the role of marketing in business.


Year 2


In the second year the management topics continue and students study subjects such as Performance Management, Personal and Organisation Development and International Business Contexts. There are also modules developing the marketing specialism such
as Marketing Planning, Marketing Communications and Managing Customer Relationships.


Year 3


Placement Year.


Year 4


All final year students will do a dissertation and modules in Business Ethics and Strategic Management and Leadership. On the Marketing side, there are modules in Marketing Management and Strategy, Buyer Behaviour and Integrated Marketing Communications and Direct and Interactive Marketing.

 

Coursework and Assessment

 

The learning and teaching strategies used on the programme aim to develop knowledge and expertise in graduate, professional and academic skills which will underpin future career development and educational progression.

 

There is a combination of structures teaching, seminar and group activities, together with associated personal learning. Formal class contact time is normally 10-15 hours per week, supplemented by independent study and directed learning.

 

Methods of assessment throughout the degree include assignments, open and closed book examinations, computer work and case studies. In the final year the 10,000 word dissertation is a major piece of independent research based work. Each student is allocated a supervisor who provides guidance for their dissertation.

 

Placement Information

During the third year students embark on a years placement in industry. This experience enhances employability and helps to prepare students for high performance on the final year of the programme. The Business School has a dedicated Placements Office managing this process and has links with leading companies, such as IBM, Berghaus, Panasonic and Marks and Spencer.

 

City and Guilds

 

Successful completion of the placement year allows the University to award the Licentiateship of City and Guilds (LCGI), a national qualification recognised by a number of employers.

 

Accreditation

 

This professional programme also gives maximum exemptions from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). Students who successfully complete this programme have the opportunity to enter the professional CIM's Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing.

 

Careers

 

The marketing function encompasses a wide range of career opportunities e.g. product/brand management, Marketing research, advertising, etc. In addition, the general business subjects studied in the early part of the programme will enable graduates to pursue careers in related business functions. Recent graduates have joined companies such as Marks and Spencer, Electrolux, Tetrapak, Flymo, Team Saatchi, Marconi, Lloyds TSB,
HSBC and Thorntons.
