Dr James O'Kane and Lai Hong Ng and are celebrating today with the great news that they have won the 'doctoral supervisor-student award' at the recent University Research Conference.
James and Lai Hong were presented with their awards by the Vice-Chancellor and each receives £250.
James was congratulated for his 'transformational leadership' in the supervisory relationship. Lai Hong is due to complete her studies in the next few months along with her sister Lai Ling and both are hoping to graduate in December.
Dr O'Kane commented: "Receiving this award recognising excellence in Doctoral Supervision is fantastic, and I am extremely pleased for my student, Lai Hong. Supervision is more than just mentoring and guidance. It has to be undertaken with a passion for the subject and a desire to enable a student to realise their potential. "
Lai Hong added: "It was indeed an invaluable opportunity to acknowledge my supervisor, Dr. James O'Kane for his tremendous support in my research. He has not only showed me the painting but also equipped me with the drawing toolkit. He familiarises me with the processes and to mould me to be a prospective researcher so that I can contribute back to the community that I serve."
The purpose of the award is to promote, recognise and reward excellence in doctoral supervision and is up for grabs by members of the University's staff and their students who can demonstrate excellence in the supervision of doctoral students.
The competition was open to academic and research staff who have normally participated in the supervision at least one doctoral student to successful completion.
Supervisors provide positive mentoring and support for students that include:
- Arranging a training programme to develop research skills and increase future career possibilities
- Introducing the student to basic principles underlying good research practice (e.g. Ethics, integrity and plagiarism) and helping the student access the diverse support facilities provided by the University;
- Directing the student to make a unique contribution to knowledge or professional practice
- Providing regular constructive feedback on progress
- Helping the student meet milestones
